Post-Vegas aftermath, time for a break
2013. július 21., vasárnap 09:53I admit I’ve been slacking off since my last post. Mostly I’ve been keeping myself busy playing poker. I’ve been spending a lot of time looking into shares too, seeing as poker is waning a bit, and I intend to make a separate post about it soon (including a full new section on it!).
So where did we leave off? After Berlin I ended up skipping IPT San Remo in lieu of a short holiday in Portugal and resting before EPT Monte Carlo. I played a few events there and did nothing in any of them so am still short a Hendon Mob flag there. After that it has been more or less non-stop poker. Andy and I had my girlfriend, Shaun Deeb, and Kevin MacPhee staying for SCOOP. The house was very busy with a high consumption of kale chips and Hamilton’s. Unfortunately I had a torrid time and had more or less given up playing most days by the end. I did play the $10k main event which was my biggest ever online tournament but to no avail. The rest of the house didn’t do much better, Shaun did the best but couldn’t repeat his four wins from yesteryear.
After SCOOP it was straight on a plane to Vegas for the WSOP. I took an odd routing of EDI-LHR-CHI-LAS in order to use my points on Virgin Upper Class from LHR-CHI. It’s a cheekily named product but is actually business equivalent. By far the best part about it was the amazing Virgin lounge at Heathrow where they have a full spa (including jacuzzi) and a lovely lounge and business area. I got a good couple of hours in there. The flight itself wasn’t a lot to write home about, nice flat bed, completely archaic video system so sat on my iPad and asleep the whole trip. I did manage to bump into Gordon Ramsay, my favourite chef, in the Chicago airport lounge (AA lounge, terrible compared with the Virgin Heathrow one).
We were in the same house as last year and it’s becoming a bit of a second home to me. I really enjoy the place as it’s very spacious and has a pool and we got on well with the lady that looks after the house.
In the end I cashed four events including a deepish run in the main event. My demise was met when I 3 bet QTo from the SB vs someone I thought would likely fold a lot. He called, the flop was QT2 and he ended up having 22 so that was that. Good read pre I suppose. I had a couple of sweats go deep but in the end all my swaps and pieces whiffed out so no obligation to head back to Vegas in November unfortunately.
One of the events I went to over the summer was the “World Series of Food”. It was a one-off event (although I hear there are going to be four a year now!). I’ll let the photos do the talking.
It ended up being a really cool summer because lots of old friends came out. My old house mate George came towards the end, my good friend from home Ben was out during the middle, and Tommo who lives up here in Edinburgh (and despises Vegas) even popped out for a couple of weeks.
It wasn’t all fun and games though, while I ended up making a decent amount of money at the tournies, my car got robbed with my iPad, iPhone, and diary in among other things. I was insured for most of it but unfortunately didn’t have any sort of copy of my diary which was extremely annoying.
Have been having trouble adjusting back to the English time-zone so I’ve been waking up at 7 am every day. It’s nice though, the weather in Edinburgh has been absolutely gorgeous so have been eating out and taking walks around town!
I’m taking a bit of down time from poker at the moment to work on a different project which has piqued my interest. It’s just a minor hiatus, I’m not sure how long for, and I’ll still be playing nearly every day on Ivey Poker [1]. I’m going to keep details of the project under wraps for now but it’s pretty exciting for me and hopefully it materializes so I can blog about it at a later date!
[1] If you use bonus codes RupertElderPoker001 and RupertElderPoker002 it gives you 300k chips and 50 gold. So you can watch more videos of Ivey chatting about tournaments vs cash games etc.
